Independent Greek Cemetery Listing

Location: RM215 NW 20-23-7-2

In 1918 a surveyor’s benchmark led to the discovery of a cemetery along a road allowance originally thought to be on the homestead of Hnat Rygus. Upon closer  examination of this area located  RM215 NW 17-23-7-2 NE corner several depressions  are clearly  noticeable. These depressions are testimony to hearsay claiming that human remains of at least ten graves were removed and reburied in the Independent Greek Cemetery.

A lone cross of cement stands over the grave of Hnat Rygus who died in February, 1905. The cross was erected by Fred Prestay who married Katherine, the widow of the deceased. There are no other grave markers, grave mounds or depressions on this two-acre site.

The author of this account is reasonably confident that his paternal uncle, Gregor (Harry) Sawchyn who was killed in a tragic accident near Birmingham in 1905 is interred in this cemetery.
